Magnesium is a major part of the Dead Sea’s unusual mineral profile. The most useful human evidence concerns local skin outcomes from a specific salt solution, and it does not show that floating corrects a magnesium deficiency or works like a supplement. What did the best-known skin study test?
In 2005, Proksch and colleagues recruited volunteers with atopic dry skin; each person placed one forearm in a 5 percent magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution for 15 minutes and the other in tap water, repeating the exposure over six weeks while researchers measured hydration, water loss, roughness, and redness.
The salt-treated skin had higher hydration and lower roughness and redness. Compared with the tap-water side, barrier function improved in the subgroup that began with elevated transepidermal water loss. The chemistry is mixed. The authors considered magnesium a likely contributor, but the solution contained a mineral mixture and the design did not isolate magnesium as the only active component.
Proksch and colleagues compared a 5 percent Dead Sea salt solution with tap water on opposite forearms for 15 minutes over six weeks, reporting that “skin hydration was enhanced.” This supports a local result in atopic dry skin, not whole-body absorption, a single-session promise, or treatment of magnesium deficiency.
This study is relevant to Dead Sea salt and dry-skin research, but it is not a trial of natural floating, mud, oral magnesium, or a finished cosmetic. That distinction matters. Anyone comparing claims about eczema should keep it visible.
Does magnesium cross the skin?
The answer is conditional. An older study measured selected minerals after daily Dead Sea bathing for four weeks and found significant serum changes in bromine, rubidium, calcium, and zinc only in participants with psoriasis; the human results did not establish a comparable rise in magnesium or a benefit from systemic uptake.
The same paper detected radiolabeled minerals in guinea pigs after 60 minutes in simulated solutions, and those animal tracer findings can show that movement is biologically possible under the experimental conditions without establishing how much magnesium a healthy traveler absorbs during a normal float.
Shani’s 1985 study reported selected serum-mineral changes only in people with psoriasis after daily bathing for four weeks. Its animal experiment used radiotracers and 60-minute exposure. Neither part established that healthy visitors absorb a useful magnesium dose, so Dead Sea bathing should not be presented as supplementation.
Laboratory skin models add mechanistic clues. High magnesium concentrations inhibited selected inflammatory mediators in isolated human immune cells, while proprietary Dead Sea water preparations changed barrier proteins and cytokine markers in reconstructed or cultured skin. These models help form hypotheses. They do not prove a clinical result in people or a finished product.
What can visitors reasonably expect?
Mineral-rich water feels different from ordinary seawater, and some people like how their skin feels after rinsing; a pleasant sensation is a valid part of the trip. It is not evidence of systemic absorption.
Salt can sting freshly shaved, cracked or inflamed skin. Use the cuts and wounds guidance before entering.

How should you read a magnesium product claim?
Check the complete product rather than the front-label mineral story, because a rinse-off cleanser, a bath salt, and a leave-on cream have different contact times and ingredients. Research on one format does not validate another.
Look for an ingredient list, clear directions, responsible manufacturer information, and warnings. A “Dead Sea magnesium” label does not reveal concentration, purity, fragrance, preservative system, or clinical performance; clinical evidence follows the exact tested concentration, vehicle, schedule, population, and outcome, not a mineral name on the package. Can you absorb magnesium by floating in the Dead Sea?
