Dead Sea salt benefits: what studies support and how to use it

Dead Sea salt has a mineral profile unlike ordinary table salt. Its supported benefits are specific: a controlled study found better hydration and less roughness and redness after repeated exposure to a 5 percent magnesium-rich solution on atopic dry forearm skin. What makes Dead Sea salt different?

Dead Sea brine contains substantial magnesium, calcium, potassium, chloride, and bromide, while sodium chloride represents a smaller share than it does in ordinary ocean water; exact proportions vary by source, processing, and measurement, and a packaged bath salt is not necessarily identical to lake water.

That chemistry explains why Dead Sea salt feels and behaves differently, but it does not by itself prove a medical effect because composition, biological mechanism, and clinical outcome are three separate evidence steps.

Table salt is primarily sodium chloride. A product labelled for bathing should not be treated as food salt.

Proksch and colleagues immersed one forearm in a 5 percent magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution for 15 minutes and the other in tap water, repeatedly for six weeks; hydration, roughness, and redness improved on the salt-treated side. The study supports that local protocol, not every bath recipe or product.

What does skin research support?

The 2005 Proksch study involved volunteers with atopic dry skin, whose salt-treated forearm showed higher hydration and less roughness and redness; barrier function improved compared with the control side in participants who started with elevated transepidermal water loss. The researchers linked the findings plausibly to the solution’s magnesium content, but did not isolate magnesium from every other mineral.

The study does not establish a one-time cosmetic effect, a whole-body treatment dose, or systemic absorption, and it should not be expanded to every form of eczema without clinical advice.

An older double-blind psoriasis study assigned 30 people to daily 20-minute baths with Dead Sea salt or common salt for three weeks. Twenty-five completed the protocol. Both groups improved, and the Dead Sea salt group had a numerically larger PASI reduction, but the between-group difference was not statistically significant, making this a promising direction rather than decisive proof that Dead Sea salt alone is superior.

Why does psoriasis research often include ultraviolet treatment?

The large TOMESA trial did not test salt baths alone; it randomized 367 adults with moderate to severe psoriasis to narrowband ultraviolet B alone or the same treatment combined with a 10 percent Dead Sea salt bath. The combined program performed better after up to 35 sessions.

That finding supports synchronous balneophototherapy. The TOMESA trial enrolled 367 adults with moderate to severe psoriasis and compared narrowband UVB alone with UVB plus 10 percent Dead Sea salt bathing; the combined program was superior after up to 35 sessions. Its result belongs to supervised balneophototherapy, not salt alone or an occasional home soak.

Does Dead Sea salt deliver magnesium through the skin?

The human evidence does not establish that bathing provides a useful systemic magnesium dose; a 1985 study found selected serum-mineral changes after four weeks of daily Dead Sea bathing in people with psoriasis, but not comparable changes in healthy volunteers, and the reported human changes did not include a demonstrated magnesium benefit.

How should you use Dead Sea salt at home?

  1. Read the complete directions and confirm that the exact product is intended for the bath or body area you have in mind.
  2. Follow that label’s amount, water-temperature, contact-time and frequency instructions. Do not convert a research concentration into a household recipe.
  3. Keep bath or cosmetic salt out of the eyes and mouth, and do not apply concentrated salt to cuts, freshly shaved skin or an active infection.
  4. Finish with the label’s rinse and aftercare steps. Stop if marked burning or irritation develops, and ask a clinician before using salt for a diagnosed condition.

A 5 percent weight-to-volume research solution equals 50 grams per liter, but that number came from a forearm study. Copying it into a full household bathtub creates a different exposure and is not a personal treatment recommendation.

How can you choose a bath salt?

Look for a complete ingredient list, clear directions, warnings, responsible manufacturer details, and batch information; added fragrance, color, oils, or other salts can change both experience and tolerance, while “pure” and “therapeutic” are not substitutes for specifications or finished-product evidence.
