Jordan visa and entry requirements when travelling from Israel

Jordan entry rules depend on your passport, the exact land crossing and the permission or visa you hold. The one dependable planning rule is this: do not arrive at a crossing expecting a visa because a general travel page says “visa on arrival.” Check your nationality through Jordan’s Ministry of Interior and verify the chosen terminal shortly before travel.

Use the Jordan Dead Sea overview to keep hotels, roads and shore access on the eastern side of the lake.

Allenby or King Hussein does not issue Jordanian tourist visas on arrival. Jordan River or Sheikh Hussein is nationality-dependent. For Yitzhak Rabin or Wadi Araba, current official Jordan pages are not aligned, so obtain nationality-specific confirmation before relying on visa issuance there.

Choose the crossing only after checking the passport and visa. Geography can shorten a drive, but it cannot make an unavailable entry process work.

The three crossings at a glance

Crossing pair Best geographic fit Jordan visa planning Vehicle note
Allenby / King Hussein Central routes, West Bank and Amman corridor Arrange any required Jordan visa before arrival; no visa on arrival Private vehicles do not cross
Jordan River / Sheikh Hussein Northern Israel and northern Jordan Eligibility is nationality-specific; confirm with Jordan MOI Some private vehicles may cross under current rules; rentals and taxis do not
Yitzhak Rabin / Wadi Araba Eilat, Aqaba, Petra and southern routes Official Jordan pages currently conflict; obtain direct confirmation Private-vehicle documents are specific; rentals and taxis do not cross

This table is a decision aid, not permission to travel; crossing operations, holiday hours and security notices can change at short notice.

Step 1: check Jordan entry through the responsible authority

Jordan’s Ministry of Interior provides electronic visa services and nationality-based processes. Check whether the traveller needs prior approval, can use an electronic visa, or is eligible for another entry route. Save the approval and the passport details used in the application.

Do not extend one traveller’s answer to the rest of a group; nationality, residence permit, existing visas, passport type and purpose of visit can change the result.

Step 2: understand what the Jordan Pass does not do

The Jordan Pass is an attraction package with a conditional visa-fee benefit for eligible visitors. It is not a visa and it does not establish that a traveller may receive a visa at a particular land crossing.

The active package, FAQ and terms pages currently describe a minimum stay of two consecutive nights, or three days, for the fee waiver. A separate older official price page says three nights, or four days. That unresolved official-page conflict means you should confirm the current rule before buying the pass for its visa-fee benefit. See the Jordan Pass guide after its source note is resolved.

Step 3: check the terminal in the correct direction

Opening hours can differ for entering and leaving a country. Allenby’s current Israeli-side notice, for example, gives longer inbound-to-Israel hours on Sundays and Thursdays than outbound hours; every terminal also has a last-admission cutoff that can be much earlier than its closing time.

On the day before travel and again on the day itself, confirm:

  • The terminal name on both sides
  • Your direction of travel
  • Passenger opening hours and last admission
  • Holiday or security notices
  • Shuttle requirements
  • Exit fees and accepted payment method
  • Onward transport after immigration

Use the Jordan-Israel border crossing guide for the operational comparison.

Returning to Israel

Travellers from visa-exempt countries generally need an approved ETA-IL before starting a journey to Israel. The official system says an ETA-IL is normally valid for multiple trips for up to two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first; it permits visits of up to 90 days, subject to border control. The official fee is NIS 25. And the authority recommends applying at least 72 hours before related bookings.

Other travellers may need an Israeli visa instead. Passport-validity rules differ between a visa and ETA route, so use the official eligibility check rather than a universal six-month statement.

An approval allows travel to the border; it does not guarantee admission. Keep the approval and any document issued at the crossing.

Israeli passport holders

Israeli citizens should verify current government instructions and use the crossings permitted for their documents; allenby or King Hussein is not a general route for Israeli passport holders. Requirements for advance coordination, hotel confirmation or tour arrangements can change; check the current Israeli and Jordanian authority notices before departure.

Do not infer an Israeli citizen’s process from the rules for a visa-exempt foreign tourist.

Passport stamps and future travel

Do not build a multi-country itinerary around an assumption that no stamp or travel evidence will be created; each side controls its own document and record process, and another country’s entry rule can change. Ask the responsible authorities if evidence of travel matters for a later destination, and keep every card or receipt issued during the crossing.

A border-day document pack

  • Passport used for every application
  • Jordan visa or approval, when required
  • Jordan Pass only if relevant, with its current terms saved
  • ETA-IL or Israeli visa for the return, when required
  • Accommodation address and reservation
  • Onward transport details
  • Travel insurance details
  • Current terminal notice and last-admission time
  • Local currency or confirmed payment method for fees

If travelling with a private vehicle, add the required registration, driving licence, translations, ownership or power-of-attorney documents and insurance. From 1 March 2026, the Israeli authority requires an English vehicle-registration translation for private-vehicle departure to Jordan at Jordan River and Yitzhak Rabin; translation is not issued at those terminals.

Reaching Jordan’s Dead Sea after the crossing

Choose the Jordan-side access point before leaving the terminal. A driver should have the exact Sweimeh hotel or Dead Sea Tourist Beach entrance and a written price; do not mix Israeli Dead Sea beaches or Route 90 into the Jordan plan.

The Jordan transport guide and trip-planning guide can build the onward route once entry is confirmed.

Decision facts worth keeping

Pass-condition benchmark

The active Jordan Pass package, FAQ and terms pages say the visa-fee benefit requires at least 2 consecutive nights, or 3 days, in Jordan. An older official price page says 3 nights, or 4 days. That conflict makes direct authority confirmation necessary before buying for the waiver.

Entry-approval benchmark

Israel’s official ETA-IL system says an approval can cover visits of up to 90 days and remain valid for up to 2 years or passport expiry. The published fee is NIS 25. Approval permits travel to the border; it does not guarantee entry or replace Jordanian permission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Jordan visa at Allenby or King Hussein Bridge?

No. Arrange any required Jordan visa before reaching that crossing. Confirm the current process for your passport through Jordan’s Ministry of Interior.

Can I get a visa at Wadi Araba?

Do not assume so. Official Jordan Tourism Board and Jordan Pass wording currently conflict. Obtain nationality-specific confirmation for the exact passport, pass status and intended stay before travelling. The reserve operator, weather and exact route decide access, so an old seasonal opening statement cannot authorize the activity.

Is the Jordan Pass a visa?

No. It is an attraction package with a conditional visa-fee benefit for eligible visitors. It does not replace entry permission or prove visa availability at a land crossing.

Do I need ETA-IL to return to Israel?

Visa-exempt foreign travellers generally need an approved ETA-IL; other travellers need the appropriate visa or document. Use the official Israeli eligibility check, and apply before the border day. Confirm the exact operator, stop, direction and return before paying, because a route label does not prove a current connection.

Can a rental car cross between Israel and Jordan?

No. Current terminal guidance prohibits rental cars and taxis from crossing. Some private vehicles may cross at Jordan River or Yitzhak Rabin when every document and insurance requirement is met. Jordan uses separate roads, currency, border rules and shore products, and there is no bridge across the lake between the two visitor areas.

How early should I arrive at the border?

Use the terminal’s current last-admission rule. Allenby currently asks passengers to arrive about three hours before closing; other terminals publish different cutoffs; confirm the exact operator, stop, direction and return before paying, because a route label does not prove a current connection.
