Nahal Salvadora: 2 km loop and route direction

By DeadSea.com Editorial

Last reviewed: September 2026

Nahal Salvadora is a compact 2 km loop on the Dead Sea escarpment, usually completed in 1 to 2 hours. It is rated medium, not easy. The recommended sequence is to climb on the green-marked trail through the fitted sections, then descend on the blue-marked trail.

Route at a glance

Field Nahal Salvadora loop
Distance About 2 km
Time About 1 to 2 hours
Difficulty Medium
Format Circular
Recommended direction Green trail up, blue trail down
Fitted section Roughly five small rock steps or falls with fixed aids
Blue-trail descent About 450 m back toward the start area
Main hazards Fixed aids, steep ground, heat, flash floods, road access

The short distance can be misleading. Everyone in the group must be comfortable climbing fixed rungs and moving on uneven desert rock.

Where do you park?

The parking area is west of Route 90, about 4.8 km south of Metzoke Shalem. Enter the access only while traveling from the north, and obey the road signs and current traffic arrangement. Do not make an unsafe turn across Route 90.

Check that the vehicle is fully clear of the road before starting. If the access or parking area is closed, do not stop on the highway shoulder as a substitute.

Which direction should you walk?

From the route area, use the green-marked trail for the ascent. This sequence takes you up through around five small rock steps or dry falls equipped with fixed aids. At the signed junction, use the blue-marked trail for the descent and return toward the parking area.

Follow signs on site if a temporary instruction changes the route. Do not reverse the recommended sequence simply because another group is coming down through the fitted section.

Who should choose this hike?

Nahal Salvadora can work for hikers who want a short, active desert route and can climb fixed aids without being lifted or pulled. It is often suitable for capable family hikers, but the medium rating matters. A child or adult who is uneasy on rungs, steep rock, or exposed ground should choose an easier walk.

Wear closed hiking footwear with grip. Carry water and sun protection even if you expect to finish within two hours. The escarpment is exposed, and there is no reason to depend on shade or natural drinking water.

Weather and timing

Do not enter when rain or flash flooding is possible in the drainage area. Avoid the hottest part of the day, and turn back if temperatures, route conditions, or daylight no longer support a safe finish.

Before leaving the vehicle:

  • Check current trail and road notices.
  • Check the wider drainage-area forecast.
  • Confirm that every participant can use the fixed aids.
  • Carry water, a charged phone, and sun protection.
  • Note the green-up and blue-down sequence on a current map.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nahal Salvadora an easy walk?

No. It is a medium-difficulty route with steep ground and fixed aids, even though it is only about 2 km.

Which way should I hike the loop?

Use the green-marked trail for the ascent through the fitted sections, then take the blue-marked trail down toward the parking area.

How long does it take?

Allow about 1 to 2 hours. Group pace and time spent at the fixed sections can change the finish time.

Can families do it?

Capable family hikers may enjoy it, but every participant must manage the rungs and steep ground safely. It is not suitable for someone seeking a level walk.

Can I hike after rain?

Do not enter when flash flooding is possible. Rain can also change footing and access conditions.
