Dead Sea cosmetics are not one clinically proven category. The useful science is more specific: one magnesium-rich solution improved several forearm measurements, mud preparations behaved differently from one another, and a small finished-gel trial found smoother skin. Each result belongs to the material, concentration, body area, exposure, population, and outcome that were tested.
That distinction matters at the shelf. A study of a 5 percent solution can support a conclusion about that solution, but it says nothing about every soap, mask, or cream that uses the Dead Sea name.
Four links from source to result
A Dead Sea cosmetic has meaningful product evidence only when four links line up: the source material, the processed ingredient, the finished formula, and the outcome measured in people. Break the chain, and the study becomes background rather than proof of the product’s claim.

What is unusual about Dead Sea brine?
Dead Sea brine is chemically different from ordinary seawater. A 22-year monitoring program at the Arab Potash Company intake followed samples from 1987 through 2008 and reported average salinity of about 338 g/L, with chloride, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium as the major ions in descending order.
The lake is a terminal basin, so evaporation removes water while dissolved salts remain. Geochemists describe it as a calcium-chloride brine rather than concentrated ocean water dominated by sodium chloride.
That chemistry makes the source distinctive. It does not reveal the mineral percentage in a cream, because sampling, industrial separation, crystallization, and the rest of the recipe can all change the ingredient that reaches the package.
Maris Sal is the cosmetic ingredient name for sea salt. It does not identify the Dead Sea by itself. Maris Aqua means sea water and has the same limit.
What did the salt study find?
Proksch and colleagues tested a 5 percent magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution on one forearm for 15 minutes in people with atopic dry skin, with tap water on the other arm. The treated side had greater hydration and less roughness and redness.
Participants who began with higher transepidermal water loss also showed better barrier measurements on the treated side. This controlled human experiment examined one solution on one body area. It did not examine a full bathtub, facial scrub, bar soap, moisturizer, or every mineral blend sold today.

Mud changes with the formula
Dead Sea mud is where the simple slogans fall apart. Change the formula and the same headline ingredient can spread, dry, rinse, and affect hydration differently; a circulation claim also failed in a controlled test.
A 2015 laboratory project altered thickeners, humectants, ethanol, and mud treatment to see how the masks’ physical properties and stability changed. Some experimental mixtures met the study’s criteria; others did not. The project answered a formulation question about stability and texture, not a clinical question about skin.
In 2018, Hamed and Almalty tested three preparations for 30 minutes on 75 healthy adult women. All produced a temporary moisturizing effect, strongest in the version containing humectants, without measured short-term changes in barrier integrity, pH, redness, or melanin. Repeated or longer exposure and damaged areas were outside that experiment.
The 2019 circulation experiment produced a clear negative answer. Three preparations, 10 ml each, stayed on one forearm of 15 healthy women for 30 minutes. Blood flow and temperature did not rise significantly during or after the application.
In 2021, researchers compared raw, salt-enriched, and over-the-counter preparations on healthy forearms every other day for 4 weeks. Hydration did not change significantly overall. The first two leaned slightly toward dryness, while the retail version leaned slightly toward hydration.
Together, the experiments show why the phrases mud hydrates and mud dries are both poor shortcuts. The composition around the mud changes the result. The mud guide turns those differences into a choice between a facial mask, body application, and cleanser.
Can one finished cosmetic have evidence?
Yes, one finished cosmetic can have supporting evidence, and that is far more useful than a broad ingredient claim. In a small study, 20 mature women followed a twice-daily topical gel routine for 4 weeks. The version containing a 1 percent Dead Sea mineral solution reduced measured roughness more than two comparison gels.
The sample was small and company-affiliated authors were involved. More importantly, a leave-on gel does not lend its result to a rinse-off cleanser, salt bag, or unrelated moisturizer.
Why contaminant testing belongs in the factory
Natural origin does not guarantee contaminant-free material. Massadeh and colleagues measured 9 metals in 95 raw-mud and commercial samples from the Jordanian market. Most concentrations were low to moderate under the guidance used by the researchers, while lead and cadmium occasionally exceeded stricter technically avoidable thresholds.
Those measurements belong to the 95 samples in the study, so they do not classify every jar as safe or unsafe. Their practical value is clear: raw ingredients and finished batches need competent testing, backed by a traceable company and lot code. Metal content is invisible to color, smell, price, and geography.

Can Dead Sea cosmetics treat psoriasis or eczema?
Ordinary Dead Sea cosmetics are not psoriasis or eczema treatments. Medical research may study salt bathing, sunlight, or artificial ultraviolet light together, but that combined protocol does not transfer to a retail cream or mask.
A Cochrane review covered 8 randomized trials of indoor salt-water bathing followed by UVB. In 2 trials with 278 participants, the combined treatment may have increased the chance of a 75 percent improvement in psoriasis severity compared with UVB alone, with a risk ratio of 1.71 and a 95 percent confidence interval from 1.24 to 2.35. The certainty was low.
Those numbers belong to supervised balneophototherapy, not a bathroom remedy. A retail claim to treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, pain, or inflammation needs evidence and regulatory status for that particular intervention.
A one-minute evidence check
Ask four questions:
- Was the subject raw material, an experimental mixture, or the item being sold?
- Were people tested, and did they resemble the audience for the claim?
- Did the amount, body area, timing, and frequency match the directions?
- Was the measured result cosmetic, such as hydration, or medical, such as disease severity?
If the first answer is raw material and the package is a complex cream, the study is background. If all four answers line up, the claim may have meaningful support.
