Masada
An ancient fortress on a secluded mountain top located at the edge of the Judea desert, Masada was chosen by King Harrods as a refuge at the end of the 1st century B.C. during the Great Revolt, Masada was the last stronghold standing in the battle against the Romans. The story of the Zealots inspired the pioneering movements around the foundation of the State of Israel and of post-1948 War Israel. In 2001, due to King Harrods’s construction projects, the Roman siege system, and the heroic tale of the last warriors of freedom in Judea, Masada was recognized as a World Heritage site by Unesco.
The eastern complex
The national park is accessed through the Dead Sea, route 90. In the eastern entrance are a visitors’ service center, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop.
The Masada Museum : Operating since 2007, the Yigal Yadin Museum of Masada features a dramatic, innovative, and uniquely designed 3D experience, a time travel if you will, where you’ll come across artifacts from King Harrods’s palace, the Roman army, everyday objects and the “ostracon’s” that were used to determine the rebels’ bitter end.
Masada Cable Car : built in 1998, this state-of-the-art cable car takes off at the eastern complex, and climbs to the “Snake Trail” at the top of the mountain. With the old cable car, the number of visitors was limited and the few that used it disembarked at a much lower point, from which they had to climb on foot. The new cable car system carries more passengers, reaches higher, and is better blended in the environment.
The bottom cable car station is an integral part of the visitors’ center. At the top, the old stairs leading from the cable car to the mountain were taken apart, and in their place, a fully accessible suspended bridge was installed.
The Snake Trail : if you want, you can climb the mountain on foot along the Snake Trail. The 2.7 km (~1.67 miles) winding trail features about 900 stairs. Climbing time is approximately 40 minutes.

The light-sound show : when darkness comes, you can watch light & sound shows that tell the story of Masada in the theater in the west entrance.
Overnight parking : with permanent tents and camping spaces, the overnight parking facility offers toilets, showers, hot water, and cooking areas (these services are offered for a fee).
The Ramp Trail : a trail on a ramp built by the Romans. A ~20-minute climb will take you along this trail up the mountain. During the Roman siege of the Zealots, the Roman used the natural rock-fall to build a dirt ramp, which they supported with wooden beams. Eventually, the Romans came up with the idea of bringing a siege tower up the ramp and broke down the wall. In response, the zealots built a makeshift wall, which the Romans burned down. Above the ramp, in the basement wall, you will notice a missing section. This section was destroyed during the siege and through it the Romans invaded Masada.
